NY State Math Test

Date of Test:

New York State has prepared a variety of activities to assess student achievement based on learning standards. While completing these activities, children solve mathematical problems by using their knowledge of specific procedures, concepts and skills.

The Sixth Grade test consists of 25 multiple-choice, 6 short-response and 4 extended-response questions. Each multiple-choice question is followed by four choices, one of which is the correct answer. Students record their responses on a separate answer sheet. The short-response and extended-response questions require students to write (rather than select) an appropriate response. Students write their answers to these questions directly in their test books.

The test will be administered in two consecutive days.

  • Day 1: Multiple-Choice Questions
  • Day 2: Short-Response and Extended-Response Questions.

Student tips for taking the test:
  • Review your Math Notebook daily
  • Get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast in the morning
  • Carefully read all the directions in the test book
  • Read each question carefully (Use all your reading strategies)
  • Underline key words in the question
  • Show all work (Even if you can solve in your head!)
  • Cross out incorrect answers for multiple choice
  • Include the main question, facts, operations and solution in all extended responses
  • Check all of your work!
